HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene)

HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene)

High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) Technical Overview

Material Composition & Characteristics

High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS), supplied by TSH TECH — part of the TSH Group of Companies, is a modified polystyrene resin engineered with an elastomeric component (typically polybutadiene) incorporated during polymerization to enhance impact resistance. This modification imparts a distinctive opaque appearance while maintaining excellent processability across industrial applications.

Key Properties:

Enhanced Impact Strength – Unlike to standard GPPS due to elastomer modification
Good Rigidity – Additionally, it maintains high tensile and flexural strength
Medium Flow Characteristics – As such, it is suitable for various processing methods
Thermal Properties – In terms of heat resistance, it Medium-range heat deflection and Vicat temperatures
Opaque Appearance – Naturally, it is white/off-white, easily colored

Technical Performance:

  • Tensile Strength: 25-50 MPa
  • Flexural Strength: 40-70 MPa
  • Notched Izod Impact: 100-200 J/m
  • Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT): 70-90°C @ 1.82 MPa
  • Vicat Softening Point: 90-100°C

Processing Methods:

• Injection Molding
• Extrusion
• Thermoforming
• Blow Molding

Common Applications:

  • For instance, food packaging containers
  • Additionally, refrigerator liners
  • Moreover, point-of-purchase displays
  • In the medical field, medical device components
  • Likewise, consumer electronics housings
  • Finally, toys and recreational products

Material Advantages:

  • Excellent cost/performance balance-Overall, it provides an excellent balance between affordability and
  • Good dimensional stability – Furthermore, it maintains its shape and precision over time.
  • Easy to process and fabricate– As a result, it is user-friendly for manufacturing applications.
  • FDA compliant grades available– Importantly, certain grades meet FDA requirements for safety.
  • Accepts printing and decoration well-In addition, it readily accepts printing and decorative finishes.

Available Forms:

  • Natural and pre-colored pellets
  • Sheet stock for thermoforming
  • Film and foam variants
